3 Things to Consider When Picking a Luxury Golf Villa in Mexico

Finding the right vacation villa for your next Mexico golf trip will take the getaway from “a bit of fun” to “the trip of a lifetime” — no matter how you fare on the course.

But getting the right accommodation can be tricky, there’s plenty of world-class golfing destinations in Mexico and even more villas from which to choose.

To help you out, here are three important things to consider when picking a luxury golf villa in Mexico. If you need any further help, make sure to fill in our Trip Planner and a Villas by Journey Mexico expert can help you create your dream golf vacation in Mexico.

1. Narrow down the destination

If you’re a keen golfer, then you’re probably aware that Mexico is replete with incredible golfing destinations. So the first question you need to ask yourself is: “Where do I want to go?”

It might sound obvious, but when you’ve got the crystal clear Caribbean on one side and the shimmering Pacific on the other, it starts to get a bit more difficult.

There are fantastic options across the country, but Los Cabos and Puerto Vallarta/Punta Mita are probably the two best. Here’s a brief overlook at both so you can see which one catches your eye.

Los Cabos

The combined jewels of Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo, on the southern tip of the Baja California Peninsula, are a golfer’s paradise.

Their unbelievably gorgeous beach-side settings and year-round good weather make the perfect conditions for an enjoyable round, while an influx of luxury hotels and villas suggests we’re only likely to see more top-end courses soon.

Currently, Los Cabos boasts 16 courses including the twin gems at Cabo del Sol; the Jack Nicklaus-designed Ocean Course and Tom Weiskopf-created Desert Course.

Puerto Vallarta/Punta Mita

We’ve squeezed Puerto Vallarta and Punta Mita together as they sit a short drive from each other, but both can claim golfing excellence in their own right.

Sitting on the Bay of Banderas, on Mexico’s Pacific Coast, the pair have plenty of top-class courses to choose from with the Jack Nicklaus-designed Pacifico Golf Course, with its famous Tail of the Whale island green, perhaps the pick of the bunch.

Once again, year-round warm weather makes for ideal conditions while their gorgeous beach-side setting provide an idyllic backdrop to a morning’s play.

2. Golfers’ benefits

Did you know some luxury villas come with benefits for golfers? In the majority of cases, this comes as part of staying within a private community (other benefits include additional security, access to private beach clubs, and more).

For example, Casa Herradura in Punta Mita is nestled within the gated residential community of Lagos del Mar, enjoying all the benefits of being a part of this elite neighborhood. For golfers, that includes preferential tee times and special rates at the world-famous Pacifico and Bahia golf courses. When you’re not on the fairway, head to the Residents’ Beach Club to enjoy its tennis and fitness facilities.

3. Distance to course

If you’re serious about your golf and don’t want to spend too much time off the fairway, then you really should consider how far away your accommodation is from the course. Villa Solarena in Cabo San Lucas, for example, is practically on the golf course with views over a green and onto the ocean ahead.

Alternatively, if you find a villa you love that is a bit of a drive from the nearest course, Villas by Journey Mexico can organize all your private transportation for you.
